The entire Hori Smoku documentary is now free to watch on YouTube, and at over an hour in length it’s an absolute treat.
If ou don’t know who Sailor Jerry was, then you’re probably reading the wrong blog. Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins was one of the most influential tattooers of all time, and one of tattooing a original “grumpy old men”! With stories from the likes of Bob Roberts, Lyle Tuttle and Crazy Philadelphia Eddie, this documentary is real gold.
Rather than talking about the pile of rubbish Channel 4 showed last week (which was apparently about tattoos but seemed to me to be about people with some rather serious mental health problems), I’d rather talk about something awesome. Like the new episode of The Gypsy Gentleman.
For those unfamiliar with the show, it is made by American tattooer Marcus Kuhn who has been travelling from city to city, exploring cool places and making great tattoos with some of the best artists in the world. This episode is based in London, and features Valerie Vargas from Frith St Tattoo, and Ian Flower from New Skool Tattoos. Both of these guys are artists whose work I have been following since I became interested in tattoos, and it is great to see them getting some international attention. Rather than going on about why they are so awesome I’ll just let you watch the video and you can see for yourself!
The second season of Tattoo Age starts on the 12th of September, an the fine fellows over at Vice have posted up a trailer (featuring Ed Hardy!) to whet out collective appetites.
This season will feature Valerie Vargas from Frith St in London, Thom deVita, who has been tattooing in New York since the 60′s, and Matsuo from Osaka.
If you haven’t seen all of the previous episodes, now is the time to get watching and prepare yourself for next week. I guarantee when you’re done you will be just as pumped about this as me. You can find all the previous videos on the vice website here, featuring Grime, Freddy Corbin, Dan Santoro, Mike Rubendall and Troy Denning.
The rather talented chaps over at tattoo.tv have put together a lovely video documenting this years Liverpool Tattoo Convention, UK Tattoo Industry Awards, and Miss Tattoo UK. We both missed this convention, and if this video is at all accurate, we really missed out. Definitely one to put in the MUST ATTEND column for next year.
