UFC on Fox 4 is going down this weekend and shins will be flying all over the place as Mauricio Shogun Rua takes on Brandon Vera in the main event. I am sooo pumped for this fight! Fair enough, neither guy has been consistent over the past… well 6 years. BUT when either of these guys take a fight seriously they provide some of the most violent displays of striking in MMA! Vera knows that this is his last chance at a career in the UFC and Shogun has always followed a defeat with devastating finishes of his next opponent.
On paper this is set to be an entertaining night; Lyoto Machida faces Ryan Bader in the co main event and Mike Swick returns to fight DaMarques Johnson, a guy I have despised ever since he was on TUF. Jamie Varner will look to continue his return to form by taking on an equally scrappy guy in Joe Lauzon. Although I don’t like it, Phil Davis has been relegated to the prelims to make way for these two fights, but there will be some kind of business decision in there somewhere.
With four top ten Light Heavyweights on the card, this event is much more important than it seemed a few weeks ago. Last night Dana White ‘confirmed’ that the winner would get a title shot against the Jon Jones/ Dan Henderson winner. I don’t know if this will be one of his empty promises that actually relies on unspoken caveats. But maybe he is just hoping that PPVs will be driven up as the winner of this fight will be seen by a large audience. Not sure, but the idea of having a Hendo vs Shogun rematch for the title gives me fist boners.
This video preview will get your juices flowing.
UFC have uploaded Jon Jones vs Shogun onto YouTube in what could be a great bit of promotion for Jon’s fight this weekend against Rashad Evans. Watch this video as a nice warm up.
Shogun is one of my favourite fighters so it was hard to watch him get picked apart like this, and although I think that Jones is a poor sportsman (keep an eye out for all of the cheap shots), he demolished Shogun with an unequaled creativity in his attacks.
As it is Shogun’s Birthday today I will post this in his honor. OK. This is the last time I will post something about this fight specifically, but finally someone has made a decent highlight for the epic battle between Mauricio Rua and Dan Henderson. Although there is no way to do a 25 minute war justice in just a 5 minute clip, this video pretty much sums up the majority of the action and twists and turns.
“I hit him as clean and hard as I have ever hit anybody.”
As I write this I am still in awe of the fight I saw last Saturday. At this moment in time Shogun and Hendo have both recieved 6 month suspensions. Henderson due to a fractured thumb and Shogun needs to have his head scanned as doctors believe he may have a fractured skull. A FRACTURED SKULL… He was hit so hard in the head that it broke… then fought back to win the last two rounds of the fight.
*Yes, that is an IV drip in Dan Henderson’s arm to replenish his body after extreme exhaustion.
I think the amount of effort expended by both fighters is obvious to anyone watching this video considering the state they were in following the fight. If you haven’t seen the fight yet. DO IT!
MMA Nation have written a great article on Dan Henderson’s early career in Japan’s RINGS promotion. With his return to the UFC against Shogun tonight, it’s a great reminder of why this fight is so interesting. Whoever wins, it is going to be a VIOLENT encounter.
