McCall vs Johnson 2: FINISH HIM!!
Mighty Mouse got it done. In a swift three rounder McCall and Johnson continued their scrap where it left off. Johnson settled into a frantic paced rhythm leaving McCall losing a whole round to what looked like a feeling out process. It seemed to me that the winner of the fight would be decided by whoever made the most of the scrambles and openings presented by each fighter. For two of three rounds that was Johnson.
This sets up a title fight between Demetrious Johnson and Joseph Benavidez. Before tonight I would have picked Benavidez, but if Johnson is healthy and brings his infamous speed to the title fight, he might end up walking away with the strap.
Although it is not official, it makes sense to have a runner up fight between Ian McCall and Yasuhiro Urushitani. McCall has a big fan following – which includes us – so building him up to contender status in a fledgling division will be important to the UFC.

The UFC Flyweight tournament hit a big snaffoo when a silly Aussie read the scorecards incorrectly at UFC on FX2 earlier this year. Presenting Demetrious Johnson with the win over Ian McCall for what should have been a draw, denied us all of what could have been the most epic fourth round in all MMA ever.
In the rematch tonight we get to see the round four that should have been and a couple extra. We will again rally behind our mustachioed flyweight hero as he quests to become the first UFC Flyweight Champion.

UFC Flyweight tournament
So UFC is back on FX tomorrow with what will be it’s 200th event. Although the main event of Alves and Kampmann is bound to be great, nothing gets me going more than an old fashioned tournament. With just four men in it, I would have preferred if the UFC held it as a single night event, but at least this way all guys get a fair chance of proper preparation for each other. In case you aren’t aware, the fighters included are:
Benavidez vs Urishitani
and
Johnson vs McCall
Everything about this mini tournament is intriguing, from the match ups to the unique sudden death round – if after three rounds it is called a draw, there will be one additional round to determine a winner. Also, how will Benevidez, Johnson fare in their first high level drop to Flyweight? My guess is that they are going to be even more dangerous than before. And what will Shooto Champion Urishitani bring to the table? Is he the dark horse of the tourney? This has the makings of a classic. I just wish that the UFC had put more effort into promoting these guys, especially as they will be the bread and butter of this fledgling division over the coming years.
We Modern Violent Gentlemen are rooting for Ian McCall to win, but he faces the toughest competition possible in the other three challengers. Whoever wins this tourney earns the accolade of best Flyweight in the world and his brand new UFC Championship title.
